The notoriously unpredictable Indian monsoon
Published on : Thursday, July 02, 2009
The Indian Monsoon & by extension the Asian Monsoon which impact about 4 billion people today is perhaps the most complex feature of the earth's climate system and climate models have achieved only a limited success so far in simulating many features of this complex system. Accurate Monsoon simulation and prediction with a lead time of few weeks to few months still remains an intractable problem for climate scientists, writes Dr Madhav Khandekar
Politicizing pure science
Published on : Monday, February 23, 2009
Dr. Pielke, a professor and the author of “The Honest Broker,” argues that most scientists are fundamentally mistaken about their role in political debates. They like to think of themselves in one of two roles: as a pure researcher, or an impartial arbiter offering expert answers to politicians’ questions. But climate change, like most political issues, isn’t so simple. While most members of the public want to avoid future harm from climate change, they have conflicting values about which sacrifices are worthwhile today, reports John Tierney in The New York Times.
