Effect of global warming on Bay of Bengal cyclones
Published on : Wednesday, June 11, 2008
In the light of climate change due to the release of ‘greenhouse’ gases into the atmosphere and the recent devastating cyclone Nargis which caused unimaginable havoc in Myanmar, one question which comes to one’s mind is: What will be the effect of global warming on cyclonic activity, particularly in the Bay of Bengal, in the 21st century? asks K.S.Rajgopal of The Hindu
Real cyclone in Burma
Published on : Wednesday, May 14, 2008
Myanmar has given us one of the most admirable women alive, Nobel Peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, and the world’s most repugnant regime. Until May 2, the military government led by army chief Than Shwe was competing for that title with Zimbabwe’s racist tyrant, North Korea’s lunatic autocrat and Cuba’s bumbling Castro brothers. But then Cyclone Nargis happened—and the junta seized the opportunity to edge ahead of its rivals, writes Alvaro Vargas Llosa in the Independent Institute.
Burmese authorities knew of cyclone Nargis days before it hit
Published on : Tuesday, May 06, 2008
The Indian Meteorology Department and Asian Disaster Preparedness Centre dispatched an initial advisory to the Burmese authorities, days before it struck land. Burma's Meteorology department posted a warning on its official website on April 27, but the information was not widely disseminated. The department said that a cyclone was forming in the Bay of Bengal and was heading towards Burma. State-run media did not issue a cyclone alert until the afternoon of Friday, May 2. The storm first struck the Irrawaddy Delta in late afternoon Friday and swept into Rangoon early Saturday.
